Periodontics
Periodontal disease is an infection of the supporting structures of the teeth, the gum tissue and bone, that if left untreated will result in tooth loss and loss of the underlying bones of the jaw.
Periodontal disease is more prevalent in patients who smoke. It is not normal for gums to bleed when brushing, it is a sign of periodontal disease. It is not genetic but there are genetic factors that pre-dispose patients to it. The best way to avoid gum disease is to brush twice daily using an electric toothbrush with a two minute timer and to follow with a once daily flossing routine. A toothbrush cannot remove plaque from below the gumline or in between teeth, only dental floss can.
Your chances of gum disease do not increase as you get older. Lack of good home care (brushing and flossing) leads to periodontal disease. You should see a periodontist if your general dentist is not qualified to perform the nessacary periodontal treatment. At Atlantic Dental Associates, we are trained in the treatment of periodontal disease, making referral unnecessary in almost every case.
